Future Leaders
!'ve had the pleasure of working across several engaging programmes during my time at Co-operation Ireland ranging from seeing young people meeting and learning from each other on a joint project, to projects that have aided our rich and diverse communities in exploring the shared heritage around the towns and cities we live in. Each programme we run has a purpose and an over-arching ambition to bring people together to provide the opportunity to grow friendships and help to improve and develop the communities we live in.
So what does that look like on the ground?
My working routine involves a fair amount of planning and organisation. I’m fortunate in many ways to have a good balance of developing the work we carry out across the Co-operation Ireland Future Leaders programme alongside the important delivery and facilitation through workshops and residentials. The delivery side of bringing people together is one of my big motivations. I worked previously as a tour guide for a decade before moving into post-primary teaching, and the experience and skills gained in talking to and working with young people and adults alike have been foundational in my role with Co-operation Ireland today. I’ve also been encouraged by mentors throughout my career to date who have helped point me in the right direction and keep focus in what I do.
When planning delivery across our Youth Programmes you find yourself in regular contact with teachers and schools confirming dates, transport, accommodation, and the range of activities that complement the themes we’re undertaking. Key to success in working with young people is ensuring we provide engaging activities which help to increase their confidence in meeting and working with new people, while helping to grow their own skillset in personal learning, leadership training, and advocacy through social action. Young people we work with on Future Leaders regularly articulate how they wish to have a louder voice across issues which affect them, and that it’s not just adults that can be leaders in decision making and policy.
As an organisation we’re continually looking for ways to facilitate these opportunities for the young people on our programmes. Central to achieving this is working alongside a great team and we’re very fortunate to have a wide skillset across our staff who are approachable, adaptable, and provide practical support at the drop of hat. I really value working alongside colleagues who are as equally motivated to facilitate engaging and rewarding programmes and we have plenty to build on and learn as we develop our work in bringing people and communities together going forward.
