The All Island School Choir Competition

The All Island School Choir Competition

Fri 16 Oct 2020 by Evan Short

The Annual All Island School Choir Competition was organised by Co-operation Ireland in association with RTÉ, and the 5-part television series ran from 2009 to 2014.  The competition brought together young people from across the island, celebrating the tradition of choral music in second level schools.

Schools submitted their entries to a panel of adjudicators who then selected 20 schools to participate in 4 regional finals, with the winners of the regional heats taking part in the Grand Final televised live from Titanic Belfast, singing from the iconic staircase.

Hundreds of schools across the Island entered the competition and it became a viewing favourite for Sunday evenings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdH6tDhkl2I

Co-operation Ireland is delighted that a number of the participating schools from the All Island School Competition have come together again to work with us and Tourism Ireland on a “virtual all-island school choir -song of solidarity” with the world.  Together they are creating an inspiring and uplifting video as a gesture of hope and friendship in these difficult times.   We are looking forward to seeing it soon and good luck to all involved.

School Choirs involved in the Song of Solidarity Initiative delivered by Co-operation Ireland in association with Tourism Ireland are:

  • Methodist College, Belfast
  • Presentation Secondary School, Ballyphehane, Cork
  • St. Mary’s College, Derry
  • Blackrock College C.S.Sp., Dublin
  • Laurel Hill Coláiste FCS, Limerick
  • Moate Community School, Co. Westmeath
