Pilot programme is for students in L'Derry to apply for scholarship to Yale University
Co-operation Ireland is set to manage a programme, which is designed to enable students from Northern Ireland to seek and be awarded financial support to study at elite universities in the United States.
The cross-community programme is specifically for students from marginalised or financially disadvantaged families to apply for a merit-based scholarship.
The programme will be piloted in Derry-Londonderry and four to six students will be awarded a scholarship to Yale University. Running in parallel will be a drive to bring undergraduates from the ivy league university to study in Northern Ireland for a summer programme.
It is planned that the programme will be broadened to enable financially underprivileged students from across Northern Ireland to apply for merit-based scholarships to elite universities in the United States.
Representatives from Yale University are currently on a visit to Derry to explain the working of the initiative.
