Discontinuation of All-Island School Choir Competition

It is with regret that after careful consideration Co-operation Ireland announces the end of the All-Island School Choir Competition series. Beginning in 2009 the competition, which was organised in association with RTÉ, provided a platform to raise the profile of choral music in second-level schools throughout the island through four weekly Sunday night heat programmes and the Grand Final, presented live on RTÉ One by Anne Cassin each November.

The project was generously supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Titanic Quarter Ltd, Titanic Belfast, Department of Education for Northern Ireland, Tourism Northern Ireland and eFlow.  However securing the considerable level of funding needed to finance the series was a constant challenge for Co-operation Ireland and unfortunately this year it proved to be the key factor in the decision to end the series.

As the competition bows out after six successful seasons, Co-operation Ireland and RTÉ would like to thank the schools and specifically the choir members, directors, staff and fellow students who supported the project.  We hope it gave encouragement to the wonderful work being done in the educational sector throughout the island.  Methodist College, Belfast and Presentation College, Ballyphehane, Cork twice were overall winners; Wesley College, Ballinteer Co Dublin and Moate Community School, Co Westmeath also won the Grand Final.  But in a very real way, everyone involved were winners.
